Project Alert (Smoke Alarm Program)
Approximately 93% of the structure fires that occur within
the City of New Bern happen in homes. Many home injuries and deaths
are caused by breathing smoke and toxic gases rather than being
burned. Smoke detection devices provide an early warning and can
awaken you in the event of a fire. Smoke detectors have reduced the
loss of life in homes by more than 50%.
"Project Alert" is available to all persons in the City limits
of New Bern who receive a supplementary income. New Bern Fire-Rescue, in conjunction with the Department of Social Services and the
Social Security Administration, coordinates this program for qualified persons. Under Project Alert a smoke detector is installed in your home
at no cost to you. If you would like to apply for a smoke alarm, click
here for a Smoke Alarm Installation Application . Your application
may also be dropped off at the Department of Social Services, Social Security
Administration, or the Headquarters Fire Station at 1401 Neuse Boulevard.
