All job announcements specify how and
by what date you should apply. The majority of open positions require that
you apply through the North Carolina Employment Security Commission office.
Due to the high volume of applications that we receive in response to advertisements
for employment, it is important that you fill out your application
completely and
attach any documentation that you feel is relevant to the position
applied for. Some positions specify that you submit a resume by the closing
date. Resumes are not accepted in place of applications unless specifically
requested.
If the job announcement instructs you to apply through the Employment
Security Commission, you will need to obtain a “City of
New Bern Application for Employment” through their office and return
the application to them. Please print legibly or type the information
on your application. All applications must be turned in to the Employment
Security Commission by the deadline date, without exception. Please do
not mail your application directly to the Human Resource office. Applications
received by the Employment Security Commission will be forwarded to the
Human Resources Department after the deadline date. Incomplete applications
will not be considered. Applications will only be accepted for currently
posted positions.
If the job announcement instructs you to submit a resume, you
may mail or fax your resume directly to 252-636-4119. Once your resume
is received, you may be sent a City of New Bern employment application
for completion. Please fill the application out completely and return it
to this office by the deadline date, without exception. Please note, resumes
will only be accepted for currently posted positions.
In order to get specific information regarding employment as a Police
Officer, please contact the Assistant Director of Human Resources at (252)

Job Offer Process
Pre-Employment Screening
The Human Resources Department
evaluates each application and resume based on skills, knowledge, abilities,
and experience required for the job. All persons recommended for employment
with the City of New Bern will be required to undergo and pass a pre-employment
physical and drug screen before being hired.
Conditional Offer of Employment
A “conditional” offer
of employment may be extended when a suitable candidate is identified.
Confirmation of an employment offer is based upon the favorable outcome
of a pre-employment physical and drug screen or other eligibility requirements.
Failure to complete pre-employment requirements may nullify any offer of
employment. Once a candidate has met all requirements and conditions of
employment, an orientation will be scheduled.
Employment Application Status
The Human Resources Department welcomes your inquiries regarding your
application. After the closing date, applications are processed through
the Human Resources office. Please wait at least fifteen (15) working days
after the closing date of the job announcement before calling the Human
Resources Department at (252) 639-7571 for the status of your application.
