ABOUT US
This Division is charged with the collection and disposal of
all residential and commercial solid waste within the City of New
Bern. Our franchised hauler, GDS/New Bern, provides once per
week collection to approximately 10,800 residential units. Service
days are set to coincide with the collection of recyclables,
which are collected through the Craven County Curbside Recycling
Program. A 65 gallon roll-out cart is provided by our contractor
for the storage of the waste prior to collection and ease of
placement for collection. The City, in conjunction with our solid
waste collection program, provides for the recycling of mixed
paper to residential households as an added means to conserve our natural

GDS/New Bern also collects and disposes of approximately 23,000 cubic
yards of commercial waste per month, through front loaded dumpsters,
ranging in capacity from two to eight yards, up to six times weekly,
depending on individual service needs. Each business is responsible
for providing its own container, either owned or leased, which is
collected by GDS/New Bern for a set fee per cubic yard, established
by the Board of Aldermen, which is billed on the customer’s utility

This Division also serves as an ambassador for the City’s message “Bear
in Mind in New Bern ... If you Litter you Lose,” through
its litter abatement actions. In conjunction with other Public
Works Divisions and the Police Department, our Litter Abatement
Officer provides assistance and instruction to citizens on proper
placement of materials for collection, Residential
Collection Guidelines,
and investigates illegal dumping sites and activities along our streets
and rights-of-way, which undermine our goal of a “litter free community.” Please
help us by “putting litter in its place.”
