Civilian (Non-Sworn)

There are a variety of civilian positions within the New Bern Police Department, many of which have current openings. 

 

Police Service Technician:

Entry Level

Grade 8 / 1 - $ 25,777

Police Service Technicians(PST's) are civilian positions assigned to a variety of different fields including, but not limited to:

  • Information Services;
  • Telecommunicators / 911 Dispatcher;          
  • Animal Control;
  • Property and Evidence; and
  • Parking Enforcement.

Employment Procedures

The City of New Bern employment procedures begin by applying through the Employment Security Commission of North Carolina.  Interested applicants may apply by completing and submitting an application.

The Employment Security Commission will not accept applications until they have actually announced openings. Once the closing date has been completed, the applications are sent to the City of New Bern's Human Resouce Department, where they are reviewed.


Employment Requirements

Every employment candidate, both police officer or civilian, will be subject to the following:

  • Initial Interview: Interviewed by the Chief of Police and/or his representative
  • Background Check: Must satisfactorily pass a thorough background investigation
  • Psychological Evaluation: Must satisfactorily pass a psychological evaluation
  • Physical Examination: Must satisfactorily pass a physical examination
  • Drug Screening: Must take a screening test for drugs
  • Civil Service Board: Must satisfactorily pass the Civil Service Interview
    (Police Offier Applicants Only)
  • Truth Verification:  Must pass a Computerized Voice Stress Analysis Test
