2011 Cops & Kids Summer Camp Proved to be a Success
The 2011 Cops & Kids Summer Camp, sponsored by the New Bern Police Department and volunteer citizens, proved to be a tremendous succes for the 6th straight year! Children between the ages of 6-12 enjoyed fun-filled days with activities that included field trips to Strike Zone, Bear Town Cinema 6 Movie Theater and the Aurora Fossil Museum. The participants also received life-skill based training regarding bullying, communication skills, civic responsibility and conflict resolution through the Mediation Center of Eastern Carolina. Approximately 60 children from the community participated in a variety of exciting and educational activities, which for many, were the highlight of their summer.
The New Bern Police Department would like to extend a special "thank you" to the following entiites for their support and donations: Christ Episcopal Church, Mediation Center of Eastern Carolina, Bear Town Cinema, Pizza Hut and the Wintergreen Free Will Baptist Church. Change in Policy Regarding the Trapping of Wild Animals
in the City of New Bern
The trapping of wild animals in the City of New Bern requires a "depredation permit". This permit allows for the removal of wild animals from a residential area that are causing significant property damage. Previously, the depredation permit was issued to the New Bern Police Department's Animal Control Unit. This is no longer the case due to a conflict in rule 15A NCAC 10B.0106. The permit is now issued directly to the property owner or lessee, where significant property damage must be demonstrated. There is no charge for the permit. Visit www.ncwildlife.org for more information to obtain a permit. Please note that the permit is not issued to remove animals just because they are in the area or have been seen during the day.
You may continue to call 252-633-2020 to report a wild animal when it is showing obvious signs of sickness or unprovoked aggression. The Animal Control Officers are allowed to take a wild animal under there circumstances.
For non-emergency related questions, you can leave a message for the Animal Control Unit at 252-672-4215.
City of New Bern's Dog Leash Ordinance

IMPORTANT INTERNET SAFETY
For Parents and Children
|
Although the Internet can be a beneficial and convenient tool for students, child predators can use it to locate unsuspecting young victims.
A survey conducted by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children revealed that one in five youths between the ages of 10 and 17 has received unwanted sexual solicitations online. The survey also indicated that one in four children has been exposed to online pornography.
Parents often underestimate the dangers of online predators and often believe their child would tell them about such experiences. However, the survey found only about 25 percent of sexual solicitations and less than 40 percent of unwanted exposures were ever reported to parents.
The New Bern Police Department considers the Exploitation of Children over the Internet to be a very serious offense and assigns detectives from the Major Case Unit , who are specially trained and committed to investigating cyber crimes against children.
