The Recruitment Unit is tasked with seeking qualified, honest and dependable applicants to fill vacancies in the department.  In conjuction with Human Resources, recruitment officers work tirelessly to maintain staffing levels.  The unit regularly attends job fairs at military and educational institutions to encourage and attract dedicated workers to join the New Bern Police Department.  The unit is responsible for scheduling interviews and conducting thorough and often time-consuming background checks for all new employees.

Employment Procedures

The City of New Bern employment procedures begin by applying through the Employment Security Commission of North Carolina.  Interested applicants may apply by completing and submitting an application. The Employment Security Commission will not accept applications until they have actually announced openings. Once the closing date has been completed, the applications are sent to the City of New Bern's Human Resources Department, where they are reviewed.

Employment Eligibility

 

  • AGE: Minimum of 20 years of age (Police Officer Applicants Only)
  • Education: Must be a high school graduate or have a GED (Certain Positions may require a higher eduacation level)
  • Citizenship: Must be a United States citizen
  • Criminal Record: Must have no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions
  • BLET: Completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training Course in the State of North Carolina is required (Police Officer Applicants Only)
