Middle School Dance

New Bern Parks and Recreation will sponsor a Middle School Dance for New Bern/Craven County middle school students.  Students attending schools with ID must present it to enter.  This is a lock-in.  Once a student is in, they will not be released until the dance concludes unless a parent picks them up! 

Adult Exercise Class

This class will cater to the needs of both adult men and women with low-impact exercises.  Registration fee is free.

YAAC Young Adults Active in the Community (Teen Council)

With a focus on recreation and leadership, high school students are encouraged to join this exciting group.  In an effort to extend this program, there are several chapters to choose from.  Chapter meets at West New Bern Recreation Center on Pine Tree Drive.  

Cheer America Cheerleading

Young Champions Cheerleading is a fun and exciting cheerleading program for ages 4-14. This class promotes coordination, confidence, poise, artistic expression, competitive spirit and physical fitness. Students will learn the following: fundamentals of pom and cheerleading, dance routines, parade routines, cheers, chants, leaps, jumps, how to perform in front of audiences, and preparations for tryouts for junior high and high school squads. Double Dutch Club

This program is a great way to keep children physically active and interested in a different activity, competing with other team in surrounding areas.  Program welcomes children ranging in age from 3rd grade to 12th grade. 

Kidsville Birthday Club

Come and join West New Bern Recreation Center Birthday Club, filled with fun and excitement for kids ages 3-10.  This program will assist parents in preparing for parties, and we will accommodate them with activities, food, and cake. 

Girl Scouts Program

The purposes of the Girl Scouts are to promote self-sufficiency, selflessness, and to teach patriotism, courage, self-reliance and kindred virtues. Meeting dates and times are subject to change. The ages range from 6 - 17

Choices & Consequences---"The Imaginary Friend"

This program targets youth, and parents of youth who are engaging in illegal drug use.  The program will discuss the epidemic of teenage drug use in the Craven County School System.  The speaker will touch on the consequences of selling drugs and the results of using drugs.  Parents are encouraged to attend this program with their teen(s) so they may learn of the tell-tale signs of drug use, and or selling drugs. 

Choices & Consequences---"Sexual Awareness"

This program will target teens ages 13-19.  The speaker will share information with teens who are engaging in inappropriate sexual behavior.  The HIV/STD Counselor from the Craven County Health Department will advise teens on the consequences of unprotected sex.  Teens will receive handouts on how certain diseases are transmitted.  There will be Q&A period after the presentation.  This program is open to the public. 

Choices & Consequences---"Penn State or State Pen"?

This program targets teens who are considered by the Craven County School System to be "at-risk".  Also welcome are teens whose parents feel thier child is headed toward a life of crime.  The guest speakers will be incarcerated teens from Dobbs Juvenile Detention Center in Kinston, NC.  The speakers are incarcerated for crimes from selling drugs to murder.  This program is open to the public. 

Fit and Fun
This program encourages bonding and interaction between parents and their toddlers ages 1 to 5 years old. Parents can play games and enjoy other activities with their child(ren) to help improve motor skills.

Teen Alliance - is now Jr. YAAC
This program is a collaborative effort aimed at fostering youth called “Teens Stepping Up”. Our motto is: “Don’t make decisions about us, without us. The teens will have rap sessions, addressing the problems or issues they are faced with on a daily basis. They also attend the County Board of Commissioners and the Board of Aldermen meetings, Tryon Palace, etc. Middle school students are encouraged to join this exciting group. 

Teen Night
Youth ages 12- 17 have the chance to get out for a fun and free Friday night. Teens will have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of activities from basketball to billiards.  Food and drinks will be served and door prizes will be awarded.  There will be a 10 - 15 minute rap session included with the activities.

Saturday Night Madness

Come to the gym for a night of fun and excitement.  Youth ages 17 and under can participate in all the Recreation Center has to offer.  There will be a 10 - 15 minutes rap session with the teenagers.

Table Tennis Club

West New Bern Recreation Center is offering Table Tennis Club every Thursday evening from 6:30pm until 9:00pm. Anyone interested in playing please come out to the center and participate. There is no cost, and the club is always looking for new members.

Fencing

Experience the exciting Olympic Sport of fencing with Salle New Bern. Instruction includes learning skills with the Epee, Foil, and Saber. Equipment is provided. Head Coach John Wollertonm has over twenty years of experience in teaching and competitive experience.  Training held each Monday and Wednesday evening, for ages 12 and up.  

Fencing Tournament:  Three USFA sanctioned tournaments a year-- one in the fall and one in the spring.   The Youth Tournament is held in February.    

"Meet Me at the Park" Tennis

Craven County Tennis Association is sponsoring "Meet Me at the Park" tennis on Monday nights at the West New Bern Recreation Center.  The program is an organized match-play for all ages and is a great way to find new tennis challenges

Ceramics Classes
Would you like to meet new people and develop friendships while learning different techniques and concepts in the art of ceramics? Registrants may sign up for one class per session and the class fee is due upon registration.  Classes are held at both West New Bern Recreation Center and Stanley White Recreation Center.  Classes are held in two sessions.  Sept. - Dec. and

Open Bid Whist

This program is open to the public.  All Bid Whist players are invited.  The games will be in the Game Room of West New Bern Recreation Center. 

Mid Day 4 on 4 Basketball

This program is open to men and women 18 and over.  Come out on your lunch break for a game of 4 on 4 basketball.  There will be a 15 minute running clock for this program. 

A.B.E. (Adult Basic Education)/GED

This program, in collaboration with Craven Community College, teaches the skills necessary for acquiring the GED.

AARP Board

The local chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons.

Outdoor Adventure Club

This club offers a variety of outdoor activities such as canoeing, hiking, sailing, white-water rafting, climbing and other outdoor adventures. Previous experience in these activities is not required.

Crystal Coast American Needlepoint Guild
This educational, non-profit organization offers active participation and fellowship through programs and instructions in the field of needlepoint. The only thing that the guild requires for membership is a love of needlepoint and a desire to learn more.  Call 639-2912 for more information.

The Embroiders’ Guild of America, Inc.

The Tryon Chapter of the Embroiders’ Guild of America is a non-profit organization which meets twice a month to stitch, improve needlework, and to learn new embroidering techniques. Membership is open to anyone interested in needlework.

This group meets to talk about revitalization of the Duffyfield community, how to improve living, and how to reduce crime. This council is the driving force behind the Duffest.

New Bern Recreation Department is sponsoring an exciting program for painters called “Paint With Us”. Interested participants can come out, bring their easel, paint, brushes and paint with other painters. There is no cost for this program, all you need to do is show up and be ready to paint and have fun! Beginners are welcome!!!

This organization encourages citizens to register to vote and discusses various governmental issues.

Stork Nest Program
This is a collaborative effort between Community Resource Center and the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. Clothes are provided by the March of Dimes for children between the ages of newborn - five (5) years of age.

Creative Writing Class
Have you had aspirations of being a writer, or would you simply like a venue to present some of your work? Come and explore your writing talents. 

Toys for Tots
Applicants wishing to sign up for the annual Toys for Tots drive should come by the center beginning in October. On average we service 150 families. Each applicant must have a valid identification card, a social security card and a social security card for each child. If the applicants sign up at our facility, he/she will not be allowed to sign up at another agency. Toys are provided by the Marine Corps Reserves.

Open Net Volleyball

Come out and enjoy an evening of free co-ed volleyball.  This activity is open to all levels of ability.

Golden Age Club
The GAC holds meetings, programs,  celebrates special occasions, holidays, anniversaries and birthdays as well as daily and seasonal trips. Refreshments, catered lunches and covered dish lunches are served at meetings. 

Tap Dancing

Come and dance with style and grace.  The class is not only a way to learn new dance steps, but is great exercise.

Senior Appreciation Day
This is a time for seniors to socialize, have fun and meet people in the community.  We will have refreshments, door prizes, movies, entertainment, and bingo. 

Senior Activity Days

For seniors 55 +.  Come and enjoy playing table tennis, billards, shuffleboard, chess, checkers, basketball, badminton, tap dance, or just get a little exercise by waking around the gym.

Seniorcise
Feel like you need to get yourself back into shape? This class will get you started. Seniorcise exercises cater to the needs of the senior adult and integrates low-impact exercise and fun.

Senior Line Dancing

Seniors, come out and learn the newest and best line dance moves every Thursday morning.  This is a time for Seniors to socialize while exercising.

Senior Shuffleboard

We invite Seniors to come play shuffleboard at the West New Bern Recreation Center.  Come out to socialize and enjoy a game of shuffleboard with your friends. 

Senior Arts and Crafts

This is a quarterly program designed to provide an opportunity for Seniors to meet, greet, and gather together for the purpose of creating beautiful pieces of art.
