Sergeant Carl Ellis Mayo, Jr.

EOW May 29, 1960

Sergeant Carl Ellis Mayo, Jr. was killed in a motorcycle accident while responding to a call.

Sergeant Mayo was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and is survived by his wife, son, and two daughters.



Detective Donald Miller

EOW December 25, 2001

Detective Miller was shot and killed in 2001 while off duty at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC.  He confronted a man in the parking lot who was driving erratically, when the man suddenly pulled out a handgun and opened fire, fatally wounding Detective Miller.  Detective Miller succumbed to the gunshot wound two days later.

Detective Miller had worked ten years in law enforcement, with four years being served with the New Bern Police Department. 

Detective Miller is survived by his wife and two children.







Officer Alexander E. Thalmann

EOW March 31, 2014

Officer Alexander Thalmann succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained three days earlier while conducting a subject stop.  He was speaking to the subject, who had been riding a bicycle, and called for backup. As he continued to speak with the subject, the man suddenly fled on foot and then opened fire, striking Officer Thalmann in the face and a second officer in the leg.  An officer returned fire and killed the subject.

Both officers were transported to a local hospital, where Officer Thalmann remained until passing away on March 31, 2014.

Officer Thalmann was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves.  He had only served with the New Bern Police Department for seven months.
