300 years of adventure.
365 days to celebrate.
Dear Friends:
It is a pleasure for me to extend personally,
as well as on behalf of the New Bern Board of Aldermen and
the citizens of our City, a most cordial welcome to the New
Bern website. We are pleased and honored that you have chosen
to visit our City. We hope you will find the time to come
and explore New Bern, North Carolina’s colonial capital
founded in 1710 by Baron Christopher de Graffenried of Bern, Switzerland.
New Bern has an abundance of natural resources. We are
very proud of the fact that the city sits at the confluence
of the Neuse and Trent Rivers and is only 35 miles from the
Atlantic Ocean. The city abounds with historical traditions,
distinctive cultural charm, and unsurpassed opportunities.
Our climate is generally mild because of our proximity to
the Gulf Stream, and visitors and residents enjoy fishing,
boating, golfing, and antique shopping in the atmosphere
and climate of a year-round resort. New Bern is also the
home of many firsts in the state and the country; most notably,
it is the Birthplace of Pepsi.
A taste of life in colonial America is ever present at
Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens, or you might enjoy
a walking or trolley tour of our three centuries of history
and architectural beauty around the historic district. There
are over 150 historic landmarks to explore, many dating back
to the 18th century.
New Bern is family focused with a number of great annual
activities. On the 4 th of July, we celebrate our independence
with activities and fireworks on our historic waterfront.
Mumfest, the greatest fall festival in Eastern North Carolina,
takes place every October as does Ghost Walk, which reveals
the secrets of our past. In December, we have an annual
Christmas Flotilla on the waterfront.
Our location makes New Bern an ideal spot for tourists,
yachtsmen, and residents to blend the past and the present
in our revitalized downtown. Please use this website to explore
our town and all it has to offer. It is our hope that you
will visit New Bern in the near future and return often as
an old friend. Whether you come as a visitor for just a short
stay or to join many others who decide to make our city their
home, I would encourage you to take part in life here and
enjoy what we consider to be one of the finest cities in
our state.
Tom Bayliss,
Mayor
