State and local representatives are encouraging the public to attend an open house to review and discuss new flood hazard data from the North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Program (NCFMP).  The event will take place tomorrow, November 2nd, at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center, 203 South Front Street. Sessions are scheduled at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The NCFMP has updated flood hazard data for all 100 North Carolina counties.  These Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) present an opportunity to see the preliminary data for Craven County, locate your property, determine your flood risk and discuss how flood risk is connected to flood insurance requirements.  Wednesday’s event will feature representatives from NC Emergency Management, NC Floodplain Mapping Program, Craven County Planning Department and City of New Bern Development Services.  Participants are encouraged to ask questions and discuss flood risk and potential impacts.

We’re here to help.  Several city staff will be at the open house to help participants locate their property(ies) and answer questions.  Jeff Ruggieri, Director of Development Services; Alice Wilson, GIS Coordinator; and Alton Wilson, Chief Building Inspector will be set up at a table inside the convention center with printed maps and laptops to assist city residents.

Resources for residents.  City and county residents are encouraged to visit the North Carolina Flood Risk Information System (FRIS) website to familiarize themselves with the areas that have been added to the hazard area as a result of this statewide update.  This website allows users to type in their address and receive flood zone, elevation, and other data.  Additionally, the City has created a GIS map which identifies the current flood hazard area and the updated properties.  Access our interactive, GIS map here.  The City has also created two “how-to” documents, making it easier for residents to understand the FRIS website as well as the GIS map. You can also click on the images below which will take you directly to these websites.

Can’t make it to the meeting? Contact us.  For city residents who have questions about the preliminary flood maps but cannot attend the open house, call us at (252)639-7581. County residents should contact Craven County Planning Department at (252)636-6618.  You can also call the North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Program to learn more about the flood hazard data at (919)825-2303.
